A first visit is the time to identify the concern, discuss health history and compare options before agreeing to a procedure. AAD recommends asking about provider experience, expected benefits, risks, downtime and cost. Written notes can keep the conversation specific.
What to compare
Bring a list of your medicines, prior cosmetic treatments, allergies, scars and the products you use on the relevant skin area. Describe what change would matter to you and what you do not want to change. Ask the clinician to explain whether the concern needs a medical evaluation or can reasonably be addressed by a cosmetic service.
Trade-offs
Ask who would perform the procedure and who handles follow-up. Compare the proposed plan with alternatives, including deferring treatment. If an explanation, risk or price remains unclear, it is reasonable to leave the visit with written information and decide later.
Using reviews
Use reviews to formulate questions about communication and follow-up; the account of one reviewer cannot tell you whether a procedure suits your history.
Questions to bring
- What are the reasonable options, including no treatment?
- Who performs and supervises the procedure?
- What should I know before deciding?
